The Smile Train

This is 'ELLA',  one of the 7¼" gauge locos to be seen running on the Abbeydale Miniature Railway. She was completed in 1991 but has had several rebuilds since then, including a larger steel boiler to replace the original, which was made from copper, as this wore out! The original design, called the 'L'il Lima', was by an Australian, although the loco is based on American prototypes and of course was built by one of our members here in Sheffield. For the technical minded, ELLA HAS 2¼" diameter cylinders with 3½" stroke and Walschaerts valve gear. The boiler is 9" in diameter. She weighs about 900 lbs and is 8' 6" long over loco/tender.
