The Smile Train
BIRTHDAY
PARTIES
We are
unable to offer any special arrangements for birthday parties but you are
welcome to invite your guests to the railway on a public running day, when we
are open 1pm to 5pm. Parties usually use the picnic tables and buy train tickets
for their guests. We do serve refreshments but you are welcome to bring your
own. We ask that guests' parents stay with their children at all times to
supervise them.

We are a thriving, long established
model engineering society, dedicated to
promoting our
hobby by building and operating
steam and other types of powered models; by invention and experimentation; by
tool making; by encouraging young people to participate; by maintaining links with
model engineers in the UK and abroad; and by furthering wider interest with the
local community who visit the Abbeydale Miniature Railway. Model engineers and
interested guests are always made very welcome.
We usually serve refreshments, ice cream and children's souvenirs when the
railway is open to the public, and our premises and
toilets are
wheelchair accessible. We have a carriage which enables wheelchair
users to ride on the railway. We are non-profit making - all receipts are
reinvested in developing the site.
Keith Watson of Perth, Australia, (shown
above right) visited
us in 2007is seen driving
the A.M.R.'s 2-4-0 steam loco 'ELLA', designed by Keith in the
1980's and built here in Sheffield by one of our members. 'ELLA'
was completed in 1991 and has since traveled many hundreds of miles. She's now on her second boiler! For the technically
minded: 9" dia. saturated (steel) boiler, coal fired, 7½" dia.
driving wheels, 2¼" dia x 3½" stroke cylinders, two
injectors, vacuum
brakes. Keith has designed and built many locos and railways
from 2 ft gauge down to 7¼" and is actively involved with
several miniature railways in Australia - most notably Castledare.
Some of Keith's loco designs are now commercially marketed
worldwide.

sending this in to us.

OF ABBEYDALE MINIATURE RAILWAY

On the left is a photo of
Guy S. Mitchell, driving his 7¼" steam loco in 1905 in his garden at
Totley Rise - very close to the Abbeydale Miniature Railway ! Around this time there were three privately owned
ride-on garden railways in Sheffield!
